Join us in making a difference for Cam's Connection!
The inspiration for Cam's Connection comes from our son, Cameron, who was diagnosed with the rare and fatal disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Witnessing Cameron's courage and resilience in the face of such a challenging condition ignited a passion within us to make a difference. Cam's Connection is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and their families. We provide assistive technology grants, fund adaptive sports programs, caregiver support groups, and advocacy initiatives to build a more inclusive and supportive community. Through our efforts, we strive to honor Cameron's spirit by empowering others to live their lives to the fullest, fostering hope, and creating a network of unwavering support.
At Cam's Connection, we are dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) through adaptive sports programs. Our commitment is to empower those affected by DMD, enabling them to thrive despite the challenges they face. Explore Putt & Par, our online store offering stylish golf apparel and accessories. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe genetic disorder causing progressive muscle weakness and degeneration, primarily affecting males due to its X-linked recessive inheritance. Symptoms usually appear in early childhood and include difficulty walking, frequent falls, and enlarged calf muscles. As the disease progresses, muscle weakness spreads, often leading to wheelchair dependence by adolescence and severe respiratory and cardiac complications. DMD is diagnosed through genetic testing, elevated creatine kinase levels, and muscle biopsy. While typically inherited, DMD can also result from a spontaneous mutation. There is no cure, but treatments like corticosteroids, physical therapy, and respiratory and cardiac care help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
Treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) focus on symptom management and improving quality of life. Corticosteroids like prednisone and deflazacort slow muscle degeneration, while physical therapy helps maintain mobility and prevent contractures. Respiratory and cardiac care, including assisted ventilation and medications like ACE inhibitors, address complications as the disease progresses. Exon skipping therapies, such as eteplirsen, and experimental gene therapy approaches aim to restore or replace defective dystrophin. Supportive care from a multidisciplinary team ensures comprehensive management, enhancing life quality despite the absence of a cure.
Assistive technology plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). As muscle weakness progresses, devices such as motorized wheelchairs, adaptive seating systems, and specialized computer interfaces help maintain mobility and independence. Additionally, respiratory aids like ventilators and cough assist machines support breathing as respiratory muscles weaken. Innovations in assistive technology, including robotic aids and smart home devices, further enhance daily living by enabling greater autonomy and facilitating communication and environmental control. These technologies not only improve physical function but also contribute to psychological well-being by promoting independence and participation in daily activities.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and fund our mission.
